Uptown United Names New President/CEO
Uptown United
welcomes its new President and CEO, Alyssa Berman-Cutler.
Ms. Berman-Cutler is a life-long Chicagoan with deep roots
in community development work. Formerly, as a land use
attorney at Foley & Lardner, she assisted clients in
working with government matters, including zoning
approvals, tax increment financing, and community support
for development projects. She is an experienced project
and team manager and has worked with Business and
Professional People for the Public Interest and in the
Office of the Lieutenant Governor (Quinn), giving her a
broad background in public policy, community advocacy, and
urban issues.
Ms. Berman-Cutler will be replacing Joyce Dugan, who led
Uptown United since 2002. Among other things, Ms. Dugan
was instrumental in the formation of Uptown’s Special
Service Area (SSA) #34 and the creation of the Uptown
Community Development Guidelines. She resigned this spring

The Winthrop Avenue Garden Project
The community garden
has been named the Winthrop Avenue Family Historical
Garden in recognition of the unique history of that block.
In addition to transforming underutilized, landlocked lots
into a community asset, the Garden serves as living marker
of Uptown history. The 4600 block of Winthrop had been one
of the few North Side areas in which African Americans
were allowed to live due to restrictive land covenants.
One bright spot is that the people that grew up &
lived on that block were a very tight-knit extended
family. A reunion of residents -- past and present --was
held on Saturday, September 12, 2009. For a little more
info on the block and the 2006 reunion, visit: http://www.compassrose.org/uptown/4600-Winthrop.html
The Garden represents a true
community effort. Among the partners are Alderman Shiller
of the 46th Ward, NeighborSpace,
the Department
of Environment & Greencorps Chicago, Uptown United, Manske Dieckmann Thompson
architects, 46th Ward Streets & Sanitation, and Hitchcock
Design Group. Additional volunteers from JP USA,
Heartland Alliance, McCormick Boys & Girls Club,
Alternatives Inc., Truman Square Neighbors, nearby condo
associations, and of course, the extended Winthrop Avenue
Family, have pitched-in regularly towards the progress on
the site.
